Which is the No 1 Horror Movie?
There are several contenders for No. 1 horror movie, but which one stands above the rest? The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Shining, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers are just some of the movies that have earned their place among the best. But which one should take the top spot? The original Saw is a classic. Here are some of the best horror movies from the past 20 years, ranked in order of their impact on the genre.
Hellraiser
Despite its low ratings Hellraiser is still a top horror movie. Its gore, strange concept, and depraved characters make it a classic. Hellraiser is one of the few horror films that has made me scream in terror. You might want to skip it if you don’t like gore. It’s certainly not for everyone. But for those who enjoy horror, it’s definitely worth a watch.
Invasion by the Body Snatchers
Invasion of the Body Snatcher is a classic film that has been described as socially conscious, with its exploitation theme and use of a “sleep no more” title. Director Don Siegel avoided special effects and instead used models. The film also features gooey pod people and blank humanoids on billiards tables, and an extended chase against an air-raid horn. It is one of horror cinema’s most thrilling and original chases.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is centered on Leatherface, a chainsaw-wielding scum. The movie features the horror of his murderous activities and how he hides behind a mask made of human skin. His victims are innocent children and parents from a local farm. It’s a memorable horror film and it’s easy for people to understand why The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is No. 1 horror movie.
The Shining
The Shining is the most terrifying horror film ever made. The film was produced by Stanley Kubrick and co-written by novelist Diane Johnson, and is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. The film stars Jack Nicholson (Shelley Duvall), Danny Lloyd, and Scatman Croothers.
The Exorcist
It’s hard to argue with the acclaim that The Exorcist has received, as it is one of the few horror movies to have won an Academy Award for Best Picture. It’s one of the scariest movies of all time, and despite being made over four decades ago, its message is still relevant today. Despite its controversial content, The Exorcist has a loyal following.
Cargo
In a genre where zombies are a given, Cargo is a refreshing change. The film features Thoomi, a human character, and a dark, but beautiful atmosphere. Cargo is an R-rated horror film, but there isn’t any gore and visceral guts here. Cargo instead relies on the psychological trauma in the story to scare viewers into watching it. Netflix is currently streaming the film.
